VE Day 60
VE Day 60 was the first in a number of events organised by Craig in conjunction with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council. Support for VE Day 60 was received from the local Town Centre Forum and Council and also the Big Lottery Fund and Home Front Recall Programme.
The event featured the Band of Her Majesty's Grenadier Guards, presenter and songstress Beverley Humphreys, two brass bands, cadets and members of the Royal British Legion.
An afternoon parade was held, featuring not only the Band of the Grenadier Guards but also mounted police, representations from Royal Air Force, Naval and Army Cadets, the South Wales Police Band, members of the Royal British Legion and local World War veterans.
The parade was then followed by a short memorial service and then a large scale evening concert featuring favourite wartime songs, music and movie themes and concluding with a traditional military Tattoo style finale of Sunset, Evening Hymn, Last Post and the National Anthems.
The event proved a remarkable success on every level and achieved it's main aim: being hailed as "a fitting tribute to veterans of all nations on the 60th Anniversary of such a monumental event in all our history; locally, nationally and internationally".
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
